This gearbox is a good example of tab-and-slot fabrication.  All the flat parts are cut from 1/8" and 1/4" plate and align precisely for welding without a special fixture.  All the welds are tig fusion or plug welds.

The spur gears are waterjet-cut from mild steel and are acceptable for low speed gearing.
